A real example from 2010
A letter to the editor:
When I read the April 15, 2010 LI Advance article about the heroism of Adam Willett standing up to a thug and protecting two girls, I was moved to think something has to be done about the violence and shootings in North Bellport. I've been a resident of Bellport Village for a number of years, and recall a gas station attendant on Station Road telling me about being held up at gun point a few times. I read the Op-Ed Article in the April 22nd’s LI Advance entitled "Greater Bellport needs to make a stand" by a graduate of Bellport HS. His article inspired me to agree that "these problems can no longer go on" and that "Adam's shooting needs to be the final straw."
My background is in astrophysics and I have a homebuilt telescope that is quite powerful, enabling viewers to see the ice crystal rings of Saturn clearly and craters on the Moon as if you're an astronaut approaching the lunar landscape. Like many others, I'm sure; I tend to feel inadequate and sometimes hopeless to do anything helpful for the community of North Bellport. But I can do something on a small scale, perhaps, with the telescope. When people look through it, they tend to forget about the problems surrounding them and realize that there is a lot more happening beyond their small world in a grandiose way. If anything, it could offer inspiration to the youth of North Bellport to think outside the box and dream bigger dreams, as our friend and hero Adam Willett has with his boxing career.
Wouldn't it be great to have the families of North Bellport attend an astronomy presentation at no cost, followed by telescope viewing of the universe? Perhaps an astronomy society could be started inviting community members to join and become part of something that "looks up" in a positive sense. It could be educational and inspirational giving some hope to the youth growing up in such a harsh environment. Does anyone know someone who has a building who would be willing to let the community come to such an event? Personally, I would like to see something that could also bring revenue into that community for improvements. It could be called the Adam Willett Education Fund.
In conclusion:
Well, after getting great-tasting food donated by 20 different vendors such as local 5-star restaurants and bakeries, and a number of items provided as giveaways, about 300 people were served a free gourmet meal and given books on astronomy and other prizes thanks to their generosity. I'm also very thankful for the help given by several volunteers who made all of this possible. Also am grateful for a financial contribution by the South Country Education Foundation, Inc. for the purchase of items such as paper plates, cups, plastic silverware, sternos heating fuel, napkins, and all the things you don't think about until it's about to take place.
